Weizmann Institute Appoints New Head of IP

Adv. Amir Naiberg, has been appointed CEO of Yeda Research and Development Company Ltd. the technology transfer company of the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel’s leading center of research and graduate education.

Mr. Naiberg replaces Dr. Isaac Shariv who is moving to Australia to manage the technology Transfer for The University of Sidney. Mr. Naiberg holds an LL.M. degree from the University of Connecticut School of Law and an LL.B. degree from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Prior to joining Yeda in February 2001, Mr. Naiberg worked for a private law firm specializing in intellectual property, privacy and cyberspace law.

As far as generating and commercializing IP is concerned, Yeda is one of the world’s most successful institutions, earning tens of millions of dollars a year from royalties, and filing around 70 new patents a year.

Amongst yeda’s most successful patents are:

  • Copaxone®, for the treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis. Licensed to Teva Pharmaceuticals Ltd. Copaxone is the first innovative drug to be developed in Israel and to receive FDA approval. 
  • An encryption algorithm that is licensed to NDS Ltd., and is widely used as the basis for television set-top box smart cards.
  • Rebif® (Recombinant interferon beta), for the treatment of multiple sclerosis and several viral diseases, licensed to Inter-Lab Ltd., a Serono company.
