An Israeli website called Subs that provides subtitles for films and television programs has been taken down following threats from a copyright society representing the film studios, pending clarification of the legal issues.
Whilst distribution of films should be in the hands of the copyright owners, and occasionally one laughs at mistranslations, subtitles are essential for those not able to understand the original. We hope that the issue will be clarified promptly, otherwise, the film studios themselves, the translators and the audience all suffer.
